Cosimo I de Medici, Toscanan ensimmäinen suurruhtinas aloitti Uffizin suurhankkeen vuonna 1560 Firenzen hallinnollisen rakennuksen luomiseksi (Uffizi tarkoittaa virastoa). Hän tilasi työn kuuluisalta arkkitehdiltä Giorgio Vasarilta, joka lisäsi salaisen käytävän Palazzo Pittiin (joka on nykyään avoinna), sekä purki muut muinaiset rakennukset. Via deal Ninnassa nähtävillä olevat kaaret ja pylväät ovat San Pier Scheraggion romaanisen kirkon jäännöksiä.
Rakennuksesta tuli galleria vuonna 1581, kun Francesco I de Medici perusti yksityisen kokoelman kahdeksankulmaiseen Tribuna-huoneeseen. Medici-suvun taideaarteet lisättiin kokoelmaan heidän kuolemansa jälkeen 1700-luvulla. Yleisölle galleria avattiin ensimmäistä kertaa vuonna 1789. Nykyään Uffizi ja Vatikaanin museot ovat kaksi Italian suosituinta museota. Pelkästään Uffizissa käy vuosittain yli miljoona vierailijaa. Tämän vuoksi arkkitehti Arata Isozaki modernisoi parhaillaan Uffizin tiloja, mutta galleria o navoinna koko prosessin ajan.

Löydät galleriasta myös karttakokoelman sekä arkeologisia kappaleita. Päivänvalon paistaessa sisään suurista ikkunoista, ovat eri käytävät itsessään arkkitehtoninen nautinto. Äläkä unohda katsoa ylös – historialliset kattomaalaukset ovat myös taideteoksia. On hyvä muistaa että suuri osa Uffizin taiteesta on alun perin luotu tiettyyn tarkoitukseen tai sijaintiin. Esimerkiksi San Pier Scheraggion kirkossa näet uskonnollisia maalauksia paikan päällä. Ollakseen vanha museo, on Uffizin gallerialla suhteellisen moderni lähestymistapa. Tarkista etukäteen mitä uusia tai kiertäviä näyttelyitä galleriassa on vierailusi aikana ja saatat nähdä jotain ainutlaatuista.
