Tutustu viehättävään Penan palatsiin, joka on nimetty yhdeksi maailman satumaisimmaksi paikaksi. Korkealla Sintran Serra-vuoriston huipulla sijaitseva Penan palatsi (portugaliksi Palácio da Pena) näkyy kirkkaana päivänä Lissabonista asti. Se on vierailun arvoinen paikka, jossa voit kuljeskella 500 hehtaarin puutarhoissa ja tutustua tämän Unescon maailmanperintökohteen historiaan.
Kulttuuriministeriö on kutsunut tätä värikästä kansallista muistomerkkiä yhdeksi Portugalin seitsemästä ihmeestä, ja se edustaa tyyliltään 1800-luvun romantiikkaa. Punainen osa on vanhin osa, joka on peräisin 1400-luvulta. Keltaiset kaaret ja kupolit ovat maurilaista tyyliä, ja siniset rakenteet ovat myöhempiä lisäyksiä.
Vuodelta 1493, jolloin kuningas Juhana II otti ensimmäisen kerran maa-alueen haltuunsa, alue lahjoitettiin Pyhän Hieronymuksen ritarikunnalle, jonka munkit käyttivät rakennusta meditaatioon vuoden 1755 suureen Lissabonin maanjäristykseen asti. Vuosien raunioina olon jälkeen Ferdinand II osti luostarin ja sitä ympäröivät maat ja loi portugalilaisen arkkitehdin Possidónio da Silvan suunnitteleman suuren kartanon, jossa käytettiin egyptiläistä, maurilaista, goottilaista ja renessanssityyliä.
Penan palatsiin pääsee kulkemalla puistojen sisäänkäynnin kautta. Kävele rehevän puutarhan kiemurtelevia polkuja pitkin tai hyppää nopeaan junaan, joka maksaa 2 euroa (meno-paluu). Kierrä palatsin muurien sisäpuolella nähdäksesi ylellisesti koristellut huoneet freskoineen ja kalusteineen, ja muista käydä kuningattaren terassilla. Valokuvaaminen ei ole sallittua sisällä, mutta voit kivuta Saint Marian näköalapaikalle, josta näet palatsin koko komeudessaan.
