Auschwitz-Birgenaun tuhoamisleirikompleksi on jättänyt häpeällisen jäljen ihmiskunnan historiaan. Holokaustin symbolissa, viiden toimintavuotensa aikana, saksalaiset miehittäjät tappoivat järjestelmällisesti yli miljoona juutalaista, yhdessä puolalaisten, romanien ja muiden ryhmien kanssa, toisen maailmansodan aikana. Todellisuuden kohtaaminen on emotionaalinen kokemus, joka konkretisoituu vierailullasi.
Leirialue koostuu Auschwitz I -pääleiristä ja Auschwitz II-Birkenaun tuhoamisleiristä. Auschwitz I tunnetaan surullisen kuuluisasta Arbeit macht frei (”työ tekee vapaaksi”) –kyltistä. Ensimmäisten leirien lisäksi siellä tehtiin lääketieteellisiä kokeita, sekä testattiin Zyklon B –syaniidivetyä. Tiloissa toimi myös SS-joukkojen toimistot. Auschwitz II-Birkenau rakennettiin myöhemmin joukkotuhon keskuspaikaksi. Sen kaasukammioiden ja krematorioiden jäänteet, sekä alkeelliset kasarmit ovat edelleen nähtävissä.
Leirialue on toiminut vuodesta 1947 museona ja muistomerkkinä Auschwitzin uhreille. Molemmat leirit vaativat vähintään 90 minuutin vierailuajan, jotta saat kattavan käsityksen täällä tapahtuneista kauheuksista. Alueella vierailee yli kaksi miljoonaa kävijää vuosittain, joten on suositeltavaa varata pääsyliput ja opastetut vierailut etukäteen.
